Need to make some changes to an existing journey? With Draft mode, you can open a journey in Studio and edit it without affecting the live version. Change some tiles, get a teammate to review your draft, and save your progress in the background while your users continue through the live version as usual. Then publish your changes when you're ready. (Take your time, we won't judge! 🙂)

# Creating a draft
To create a draft version of a published journey, where you can make changes without impacting a live journey:
-
Open a journey in Studio and click Edit journey. This creates a new draft version of your live journey and switches you to Draft mode.
-
Before making changes, ensure that you're viewing the draft version of the journey. Click the arrow at the top of the page and ensure that Draft is selected.
Alternatively, while viewing the published version of a journey in Studio, click View drafted edits at the bottom of Studio. This will open the draft version of the journey.
-
Update the draft with any changes you want to make.
WARNING
You can only have one draft version of a published journey at a time, so be sure that you don't edit a journey when someone else is doing so, as you could accidentally overwrite their changes.
-
When you’re ready to make your changes live, click Publish. This brings up a confirmation menu with a list of everything that's changed:
-
If everything looks good, click Publish.
This will replace the current version of the live journey with the draft version. Any users who are currently in the live journey will be switched to the new version as soon as they complete the step they're on. Any users who were in tiles you've deleted will exit the journey.
# Resetting a draft
If you change your mind about your edits, you can reset your draft and start over. To do this, click the ^ button and select Reset draft.
Your draft will revert to the same configuration as the published version, but won't be deleted.
# Deleting a draft
You can also completely delete a draft if it has never been published before
(indicated by Draft
in the Status column.)
WARNING
Deleting a draft is permanent, so use caution!
To delete a draft from the Journeys page, go to the Drafts tab. Click the three dots menu on the draft's row, and click Delete.
To delete a draft while you're in Draft mode editing a journey, click the arrow in the bottom left of Studio, and select Delete draft.
# Viewing previous versions of a journey
To see a timeline of all the different versions of a published journey, click the three dots at the top of the page and select Version history.
You'll see a list of versions that shows each time the journey was published or turned on or off, which team member created each version, and a list of changes that were made in each version (if any).
NOTE
The version history feature only goes back to July 20, 2022. Any versions you created before this date won’t be listed in your journey's version history.
Heads-up: Not all changes show up in the journey's version history. Here's what does and doesn't:
Shows up in the version history | Doesn't show up in the version history |
---|---|
Publishing a draft | Adding a draft |
Turning the journey on | Saving a draft |
Turning the journey off | Editing a draft |
Adding a tile | Updating a campaign |
Removing a tile | Renaming the journey |
Editing a tile | Adding a note |
Connecting a tile | Editing a note |
Disconnecting a tile | Removing a note |
IMPORTANT
Changes you make to a campaign that's part of a journey will not be reflected in the journey's version history.
# Restoring a previous version of a journey
Need to roll back some changes you made? No problem! After you've edited a published journey, you can revert to a previous version.
NOTE
To restore a previous version of a journey, you need the Draft and Manage & Publish Journeys permissions. (If you don’t want certain team members to be able to restore a previous version of a journey, they should not have these permissions.)
While you're viewing a journey's version history, select the version you want to restore and click Restore as draft.
When you restore a previous version of your journey, the changes are added as a draft — the published journey doesn't change. You can review the draft and double-check your edits before you publish them.
NOTE
If you already have an existing draft for your journey, restoring the version will overwrite your existing draft. Use caution!
Every time you re-publish or turn off your journey, a new version will be added to the version history timeline (even if no edits were made).
If the version you restore removes some message tiles from the journey, you'll stop seeing updated analytics for those campaigns. If the restored version adds any message tiles to the journey, you'll start to see metrics for those campaigns in Messaging Insights.
