In this tutorial, we’ll build a simple journey that sends a welcome email, waits two minutes, then sends a follow-up email.
Steps
Step 1: Create a new journey
The first thing we need to do is create a blank journey.
Sign in to Iterable, and navigate to Messaging > Journeys.
-
Click the New journey button.
-
Enter a name (for example, “Welcome Sequence”) and description for your journey, then click Create journey.
Step 2: Set up the Start tile
Let’s configure this journey to start for a user when they subscribe to a list called “New Subscribers.” Since this is a welcome sequence, we probably only want users to go through this journey once.
Double-click the Start tile to set it up.
Under Entry source, click into the dropdown box and select List subscribe.
-
Then choose the name of the list (for example, “New Subscribers”) from the dropdown below.
NOTE
If you don’t have any lists yet, you’ll need to create one first. See Adding Users and Creating Lists.
Under Maximum entries, select 1.
Under Simultaneous entries, select Contacts must finish this journey before starting this journey again.
-
Click the Update button.
Step 3: Add an Email tile
Now let’s add the first email your users will receive in this sequence.
-
Drag an Email tile onto the canvas.
TIP
Want Iterable to choose which channel to send your message on? Add a Channel Optimization tile instead.
Connect the Start tile to the Email tile.
Double-click the Email tile to set it up.
Give the email campaign a name (for example, “Welcome to Calvin & Maya”).
Under Content, click Choose a template.
-
Select one of your templates, and click Attach template.
NOTE
If you don’t have any templates yet, you’ll need to create one first. See Templates Overview.
Click Update.
Step 4: Add a Delay tile
Next, let’s tell the journey to wait two minutes after sending the first email.
Drag a Delay tile onto the canvas.
Connect the Email tile to the Delay tile.
Double-click the Delay tile to set it up.
Under Wait, select For a certain amount of time.
Set the number of minutes to 2.
-
Click Update.
Step 5: Add another Email tile
Now let’s add the second email your users will receive in this sequence.
Drag another Email tile onto the canvas.
Connect the Delay tile to the second Email tile.
Double-click the Email tile to set it up.
Give the email campaign a name (for example, “Find Your Style”).
Under Content, click Choose a template.
Select one of your templates, and click Attach template.
-
Click Update.
Step 6: Test the journey
Almost done! Before we turn on the journey, let’s test it to make sure everything is working as expected.
-
Click Test journey in the bottom right of the page.
-
Enter your email address, and click Test journey.
Check your inbox to make sure you’re receiving the emails like one of your users would.
Step 7: Publish the journey
When you’re finished building your journey, it’s time to turn it live!
Click Save draft to save your progress.
-
Then, click Publish.
