The Survicate + Iterable Integration lets you easily send customer feedback surveys in your Iterable campaigns and log survey responses as user attributes and events.
# In this article
# Requirements
To set up this integration, you need the following:
- An active Survicate account
- User, Admin, or Owner access to your Survicate account
- A server-side Iterable API key
# Setup instructions
To connect your Survicate and Iterable accounts, you'll create an API key in Iterable, then enter it when you set up the integration in Survicate.
# In Iterable
To create an API key, go to Integrations > API Keys.
See Creating API Keys for detailed instructions on how to create, name, and store the API keys you need for authenticating with Iterable's partner platforms.
# In Survicate
Sign in to your Survicate account, and go to Integrations.
-
Search for Iterable, and click Connect.
-
Enter the Iterable API key you created in the previous step, and select your Iterable project URL. Make sure you select the URL that corresponds to the Iterable data center that hosts your project. (To learn more, see Iterable's European Data Center.)
Click Connect.
# Creating surveys
Once you've successfully set up the connection between Iterable and Survicate, you can start creating surveys in Survicate, sending them in Iterable email campaigns, and syncing events and user updates to Iterable.
In Survicate, click Create New Survey, and set up your survey as desired. For detailed instructions on how to do this, see Survicate's support article How to Create a Survey to Send via an Email or Shareable Link.
-
In the Configure tab of the survey, select Iterable as the tool you want to use to identify respondents.
# Configuring a survey's settings
You can set individual settings for each survey. Go to your survey, select the Connect tab, and choose Iterable from the list of available integrations.
# Identifying respondents
For this integration to work, you must collect each respondent’s email address
(email) or user ID (userId). When you send a survey via Iterable, the email
value is collected automatically. If you use a website or mobile app to send your
survey, make sure to pass the email value in the code.
If you prefer the integration to be based on Iterable userId values, you can
pass them to Survicate along with each user's response using the following methods:
-
Email/shareable link surveys: Add
&user_id=to the URL of the survey link or code. -
Website or in-product surveys: Pass the Survicate
user_idvalue as a user trait with JavaScript. -
Mobile app surveys: Pass the Survicate
user_idvalue with the Mobile SDK.
IMPORTANT
Survicate and Iterable use different syntax for their respective user ID fields:
- Iterable:
userId - Survicate:
user_id
Make sure you use the correct syntax to refer to each value, or the integration will not work correctly.
When configured properly, this lets you assign responses to users and update the
correct user profiles in Iterable. If both an email address and user ID are
collected for a user, the Iterable userId takes priority. If a user is matched
by ID, even if the email address doesn't match, their Iterable user profile is
still updated.
# Syncing events from Survicate to Iterable
You can sync users' Survicate responses to Iterable as user profile field values to enrich your understanding of your customers' behavior and preferences.
-
In Survicate, go to the Iterable integration, click the Settings tab, and open the Update Fields section.
-
Select a survey question from which you wish to update users' profiles.
NOTE
The Survicate + Iterable integration does not support Ranking and Matrix questions.
-
Add the name of the attribute you'd like to update under the user field.
-
By default, Survicate sends the content of a survey response as an attribute value, but you can change the label to make it shorter or to fit your data structure. Click Edit Mapping to modify these values.
NOTE
For NPS® surveys, Survicate maps values based on response groups (for example, "0-6 Detractors"). To receive numeric values instead, switch on the option Send answers as 0-10 values.
-
Click Add New to connect more survey questions and value mappings to the integration.
Click Test Integration to check your configuration. This creates a user profile in your Iterable project with an
emailofiterable-test@survicate.comthat is populated with the fields you've set up in the integration.Click See Sample Data to view the test user profile.
# Sending custom events to Iterable
In addition to updating respondents' Iterable user profiles, each time a respondent
answers a survey question, Survicate can send a custom event to Iterable named
survicate-question-answered.
In the integration settings, under Send Responses as Custom Events, choose whether you want to send the event for responses to all survey questions, the questions you selected in the Update Fields section, or none.
# Sending a survey in an Iterable email campaign
Once your survey is configured, go to the Share tab and select how to send
it. When you send your survey to your existing Iterable users, the integration
automatically captures respondents' first name (firstName), last name (lastName),
and email address (email).
There are two options for including a survey link in an Iterable email:
- Survey Link: Copy the survey link and include it in a hyperlink or button
- Email Embed: Embed the first survey question in the email so respondents can start the survey right from the email.
# Option 1: Survey Link
To copy the link to your survey, go to the survey's Share tab and click Copy Survey Link.
Open your Iterable email template, and paste the link where you'd like to include it in the email message users receive.
# Hyperlink
To include your survey link as a hyperlink in the text of your email message, highlight some text in your email design, click Insert/Edit Link, and paste your survey link in the URL field.
# Button
To include your survey link as a button in your email message, add a Button message element to your email design, and paste the survey link in the URL field under Action.
# Option 2: Email Embed
To encourage users to start a survey right away, you can display the first question directly in the body of an email. Users can begin the survey in the email and will be redirected to a landing page to take the rest of the survey.
-
Go to the survey's Share tab, find the Email Embed section, and click Get Email Code. Copy the HTML code.
-
In Iterable, create the email campaign you want to use to send the survey. You can use any of Iterable's three supported template editors.
TIP
For surveys that include long rating scales, such as the 1-10 NPS® scale, we recommend using the Side by Side editor — it's less likely to divide the scale into two lines in the rendered email message.
# Drag and Drop editor
Add an HTML message element to your email template.
-
Paste the email embed code into the HTML Properties field.
# WYSIWYG editor
Go to Content > Snippets and create a snippet.
-
Paste the email embed code into the snippet's HTML editor box, configure the snippet's details, and save it.
-
Add the snippet to your WYSIWYG email template.
# Side by Side editor
Open the Side by Side editor.
-
Paste the copied email embed code into the HTML editor.
When you're finished editing your email template, select an audience, configure your delivery preferences, and schedule or send the campaign when you're ready. To learn more, see Sending or Scheduling a Blast Campaign.
It's a good idea to send the campaign to yourself or your colleagues first to see what the survey experience will be like for your respondents and ensure that all responses and user data are captured as expected.
# Analyzing survey results
# In Survicate
After your survey starts collecting responses, you will see them immediately in the Analyze tab of the survey.
To learn more about analyzing survey results, see Survicate's support articles How to Analyze Survey Results and Insights Hub.
# In Iterable
# Viewing Survicate custom events in Iterable
To see how many times a user has responded to your Survicate surveys, go to
a user's profile and click Events > Summary. Here, you'll see the total
count of survicate-question-answered events that have been logged for the user.
To view details about a user's logged survicate-question-answered events, go
to the user's profile and select Events > History. Here, you'll see a list
of each logged instance of the event. Select an instance to view its metadata,
including the name of the survey, the question, and the user's response.
# Creating user segments based on survey responses
You can use Iterable's Segmentation tool to create cohorts of users based on data you collect from your Survicate surveys.
If you configure the integration to update users' profiles when they respond to your surveys, you can create cohorts based on the data you capture. For example, if you run an NPS® survey, you could create a list of detractors and schedule follow-up communication with them.
You can also create segments based on the survicate-question-answered custom
event. For example, you could create a segment of users who have never responded
to a survey.
