NOTE
To add Embedded Messaging to your Iterable account, talk to your customer success manager.
This article describes how to create and activate an embedded message campaign. After you do this, users will start seeing the embedded message in your apps and on your websites — wherever you've added the placement that can display it.

Permissions
To work with embedded message campaigns in Iterable, you'll need these permissions:
Action | Required permission |
---|---|
View embedded message campaigns | View Journeys, Campaigns, and Experiments |
Create embedded message campaigns | Draft Journeys, Campaigns, and Experiments |
Activate embedded message campaigns | Manage and Launch Campaigns |
Prioritize embedded campaigns | Manage and Launch Campaigns |
Step 1: If your project doesn't have a placement, create one
Before you can create an embedded message template or campaign, your project must have at least one embedded message placement. To learn how to create a placement, read Defining Placements for Embedded Messages.
Step 2: Create a campaign
To create a campaign, navigate in Iterable to Messaging > Campaigns and create an Embedded campaign:
When setting up a new embedded message campaign:
Choose the placement that should display the campaign.
Instead of Blast or Triggered, choose Eligibility. To learn more about eligibility, read Defining Eligibility Lists for Embedded Messages.
For example:
Step 3: Configure the campaign
Then, in the campaign builder, configure your campaign. For example:
In this example campaign:
Under Audience, the eligibility list is set to
Cat audience
. This is the example eligibility list created in article Defining Eligibility Lists for Embedded Messages.-
The campaign's Content is set to the template created in article Creating Embedded Message Templates. After you select a template, you can edit it as needed — or, you can click Start from Scratch and create new content altogether.
NOTE
Like other kinds of campaigns in Iterable, embedded message campaigns support locales.
-
For Delivery, the campaign is configured to have top priority of the four campaigns available for this placement.
Iterable provides a drag-and-drop interface for setting campaign priority. When using this interface, campaigns closer to the top of the list have higher priority.
If a user opens an app or website that contains the placement that displays a given embedded message campaign, and they navigate to the part of the app or site where that placement lives, and there aren't any higher-priority campaigns for that placement to show them, they'll see the campaign in question. In this case, the "Daily cats campaign!"
Step 4: Preview the campaign
Before activating an embedded message campaign, test it to make sure that it displays as you expect. Testing a campaign is similar to testing a template. To learn how to do it, read Testing a template.
Step 5: Review and schedule the campaign
To schedule your campaign, click Review. Verify that everything looks correct, make any necessary fixes, and then click:
- Start Now to activate the campaign immediately
- Schedule to schedule the campaign for the future. When scheduling a campaign, the date and time picker use the project's time zone.
Step 6: Monitor user engagement
After sending an embedded message campaign, you'll likely want to understand how users are engaging with it. To do this, you can use Campaign Analytics and Messaging Insights. To learn more, read Monitoring Embedded Message Campaigns.
Ending embedded message campaigns
There are various ways to end an embedded message campaign:
- When you schedule the campaign, provide an explicit end time.
- On the campaign details page (the page you see when you open a campaign from Messaging > Campaigns), click Abort Campaign and confirm your choice.
- On Messaging > Campaigns page, archive the campaign.
- On Settings > Embedded Message Placements, archive the placement associated with the message. (Careful, though: this will end all campaigns for that placement, and disable any templates associated with it.)
