Templates are blueprints that you can use to build messages in Iterable. With templates, you can set up message layouts, styles, and content that you can customize and reuse in multiple campaigns and journeys.
Templates can include things like:
- Plain text
- AMP for Email content
- Customer profile data
- Information from campaign-triggering events
- Content from data feeds
- Catalog information
- Conditional logic
There are three kinds of templates in Iterable:
Base templates - Base templates are templates that you can copy, customize, and use in multiple Iterable campaigns and journeys. With base templates, you can create and send messages that are consistent in content, style, and brand voice.
Campaign templates - Campaign templates include customized message content associated with one of your campaigns.
Journey templates - Journey templates include customized message content associated with one of your journey campaigns.
To learn more about the different kinds of templates, see Base Templates, Campaign Templates, and Journey Templates.

Browsing your templates
To view your organization’s templates, sign in to Iterable and navigate to Content > Templates.
The Templates page is your home base for creating, viewing, and managing the templates you use to build messages in Iterable.
From this page, you can:
- View all of your templates
- Create and import new templates
- Search, sort, and filter your templates
- Preview a template before sending it to your customers
- View the revision history of a template
- Copy, export, and delete templates
- Organize your templates into folders
Use the filters at the top of the page to view all templates of a particular type: All, Email, In-App, SMS, Push, or Web Push.
By default, your templates will appear in a list view.
To switch to a card view, click the grid button in the upper-right corner of the page.
You can toggle between list view and card view at any time (your selection will be saved between sessions).
The Templates page shows all of your base templates—it doesn't show any of your campaign templates or journey templates.
To view a campaign template, navigate to Messaging > Campaigns and open the campaign you're interested in.
To view a journey template, navigate to Messaging > Journeys. Open the list of campaigns associated with the journey, and select the campaign you're interested in.
Creating a new template
Click the green New template button in the upper-right corner and select a template type (Email, In-App, Push, etc.) from the drop-down menu.
Enter a template name, and select a template editor (for email and in-app templates).
Click Create template.
For more information on how to create templates, see the following support guides:
- Template Options for Email
- Template Options for In-App Messages
- Template Options for Push Notifications
- Template Options for SMS
- Template Options for Web Push Notifications
Importing an email template
To import the HTML for an existing email template:
Click the Import template button in the upper-right corner of the page.
To upload a template from your computer, click Select template for upload and choose the file you'd like to upload. Alternatively, enter the URL for an existing template.
Click Upload Template.
When you import an HTML file, Iterable will open it in either the WYSIWYG (What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get) editor or the side-by-side editor, depending on your project settings. Generally, it's best to use the side-by-side editor to edit imported templates—the WYSIWYG editor occasionally inserts extra HTML for formatting purposes. For help choosing a template editor, see the Template Editors support guide.
Sorting, filtering, and searching your templates
The Templates page lets you sort your templates, filter them based on categories or attributes, and search by name or subject.
Sorting your templates
You can sort your templates by name, medium, or last modified date. To sort in list view, click the table headers. To sort in card view, click into the Sort by box and select an option from the drop-down.
Searching your templates
To search your templates by name, subject, or template ID, type a search term into the search bar in the upper-right corner of the page. The templates list will automatically refresh to return templates that match your search term.
Filtering your templates
To quickly filter your templates by channel, click one of the tabs in the upper-left corner of the page. You can choose between All, Email, In-App, SMS, Push, and Web Push.
To apply more filters (like “Created by”), click the Filters button and select some options from the menu that appears.
When you apply multiple filters, templates in your results list will match at least one of the filters you’ve selected—not necessarily all of them.
The search bar and filters work in tandem, allowing you to search within a filtered subset of your templates.
For example, let’s say you want to find all of your holiday marketing email templates. To do this, select the Email tab in the top left of the page, click the Filters button and select Message type > Marketing, then type “holiday” in the search bar.
Editing a template
To edit a template, click the template's name. This opens the Edit Template page, where you can update the template's name, associated message type, content and more.
Editing a template won't affect any of the campaigns you’ve sent that are based on it.
Copying a template
To copy a template to another project, you'll need the Templates > Create & Manage permission in both projects.
To make a copy of a template:
In list view on the Templates page, click the overflow button (three dots) in the template's row, and click Make a copy.
In card view, hover over the template you’d like to copy and click Make a copy.
Choose a location for the copy: Current project or Another project. If you're copying to another project, select the destination project. Provide a name for the new template, and click Copy Template.
Previewing a template
There are three ways to preview a template before sending it to your customers:
To preview your template in a new tab of your browser (without downloading the template to your computer), click the overflow menu button and select Preview in new tab.
To see how your template will look on different devices, click the overflow menu and select Preview on device (this option is only available for email templates).
To see what your template will look like after it has been customized with user data, click the overflow menu and select Preview with data.
For more information about previewing templates, see the Previewing Templates with Data support guide.
Viewing a template’s revision history
To see previous versions of a template, click the overflow menu button and select View revisions.
On the Template History page, you’ll see a list of every revision of your selected template (with the current version at the top).
To restore a previous version of your template, hover over the row of the version you’d like to revert to and click Restore.
Restoring a revision adjusts the template's content, but it does not change any settings (like the subject line or custom links).
Exporting HTML for email templates
To export the HTML for an email template, click the overflow menu button and select Export HTML from the menu.
To export HTML for multiple email templates at once, select the campaigns you're interested in (in list view, use the checkboxes in the left column; in card view, use the checkboxes on each template preview), and click the Export HTML button in the purple bar at the top of the screen.
Deleting a template
To delete a template, click the overflow menu button and select Delete from the drop-down. (Be careful! This will permanently delete your template.)
To delete multiple templates simultaneously, select the templates you want to delete (in list view, use the checkboxes in the left column; in card view, use the checkboxes in the corner of each card), and click the Delete button at the top of the screen.
Viewing spam reports for email templates
To view a spam report for one of your email templates, open the template. Scroll to the bottom of the Edit Template page and click the Check spam report link.
You'll see a screen that looks like this:
For more information on generating and viewing spam reports, see the Viewing Spam Reports support guide.
Organizing your templates with folders
You can use folders to group similar templates together on your Templates page.
To create a folder, click the New folder button at the top of the page.
Give your folder a name (e.g., “Sales & Promotions”), and click Create folder.
Add some templates to your new folder.
To move a single template into a folder:
Click the overflow menu (three dots) for the template you want to move and select Move to folder from the drop-down menu.
To move multiple templates into a folder at once:
Use the checkboxes on the left side of the page to select the templates you want to move, then click Move to folder in the purple bar at the top of the page.
- Folders can only be used to group resources of the same type (you can’t add templates, campaigns, and journeys to the same folder). You’ll have a separate set of folders for your Templates, Campaigns, and Journeys pages.
- You can nest folders up to 10 levels deep.
- Folder names can be up to 150 characters.
- When you search your templates list, the search results will include any folders that match your search terms.
