When using Iterable, remember the distinction between base templates, campaign templates and journey templates:
Base templates contain message content and styling that campaigns can copy, customize and send to your project's contacts. Multiple campaigns can derive from and customize the same base template without impacting each other, because each campaign gets its own copy of the base template's content.
For example, a base template might define a Seaonal Sale email, and include copy, layout and styles useful for promoting seasonal sales in general. Campaigns for specific seasonal sales throughout the year could then reuse that base template, modifying it each time as needed.
Maintaining a comprehensive set of templates helps you ensure consistency in content, style, tone and voice across all your campaigns.
Campaign templates are the customized templates associated with specific campaigns. Whether you define a campaign template from scratch or derive its content from an existing base template, you can modify it without fear of accidentally impacting other templates of any kind.
For example, an Autumn Sale campaign might use the Seasonal Sale template (described above) as its starting point, customizing it with relevant images, text and links. Similarly, a Winter Sale campaign might derive from that same Seasonal Sale template, customizing it in different ways. In both cases, the original Seasonal Sale base template remains unmodified.
Iterable sometimes delineates between blast campaign templates (the templates associated with blast campaigns) and triggered campaign templates (the templates associated with triggered campaigns).
Journey templates are the customized templates associated specifically with campaigns sent by Iterable journeys.
- When you open a campaign (whether it's associated with a journey or not), the Edit Template screen appears. On this screen, you're editing the customized template associated specifically with that campaign—not the base template from which it derives.
- Iterable's various template APIs allow you to read and update base templates, campaign templates and journey templates. These APIs are not restricted to base templates—they can also be used to read and update templates associated with blast campaigns, triggered campaigns and journey campaigns (changing their content for future sends). For descriptions of these APIs, read the API documentation.
